The island of Gotland makes perfect peaceful escape, possibly as a place to visit during a vacation in Sweden, or as a trip of their own. History and replete with beautiful scenes, it is an ideal getaway from busy city life.

Situated just 45 minutes’ flight from Stockholm Airport, it is easy to access during holidays on the mainland. A sunny summer escape, it makes for the perfect excursion during tour holidays in Sweden – and an opportunity to experience some of its lesser-known medieval history.

The main attraction of Gotland is the city of Visby. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is home to scores of beautiful historical buildings, an impressive cathedral and some 94 medieval churches – many of which are recovered and in use.

To learn more about the city’s intriguing history, visitors can head to the Gotland Historical Museum, which tells its story. Walking tours of the city are also available, which combine viewing its key sights with hearing about their background and importance. And for some beautiful scenery, the Tradgarden – or botanical gardens – is a must-see.

Meanwhile, an island of Gotland is refreshing to discover walking or cycling. It particularly lends itself to cycling, fishing village with a lot of it easily accessible on a trip attractions. Also, most buses are happy to have bicycles on board, giving you the flexibility to choose how far you can cycle.

Gotland also has some islands of its own. Just ten minutes’ ferry ride away is the tranquil island of Faro, which is comprised mostly of small fishing villages and beaches, as well as the Skalasand nature reserve.

If nature reserves particularly interest you, the island of Stora Karlso should also prove a worthwhile visit. Situated similarly close to Gotland, it is home to the second oldest nature reserve in the world, where holidaymakers can see a vast array of birds and plants.

The island of Gotland to provide the perfect score of Swedish real, full of traditional buildings, beautiful scenery and steeped in history. With so many choices for a quiet trip, it is the ideal place to relax while exploring the culture of Sweden.

The best cities in Sweden has three major cities – Stockholm, Malmo and Gothenburg. It also has many other cities across the country that can be divided into three regions – Central, Southern and Northern Sweden. Sweden has a rich culture and history dating back many thousands of years to the time of the Vikings. It also has influences from medieval, Renaissance and early modern periods, as well as Russian, German, Norwegian and Danish influences. In modern times Sweden is one of the most free and developed of Europe’s countries and is home to many millions of immigrants and refugees, who have all sought to make a new life in Sweden.

Stockholm is an international port city located in the fjords of Sweden. It has amazing shopping, fabulous food, world class hotels and a world famous club and music scene as well as a strong cultural life. Stockholm is about 700 years old and covers 14 islands on the Baltic Sea. You can see Stockholm by foot, bus, car, bike, train or boat. Stockholm has many beautiful palaces and castles. The royal family live at the famous Drottingholm Castle. Just recently, Sweden’s much loved Crown Princess Victoria was finally married to Daniel Westling, a Prince from another part of Sweden.

Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city. At one point it used to be an industrial seaport, but nowadays it is mainly a contemporary culture and international sports locale. An Opera House was built in 1994 and many of its museums were reimagined. Gothenburg is also world famous for its creative use of shellfish and north Atlantic fish in its meals. There are many restaurants that serve only the best Swedish food throughout Gothenburg. You can travel around Gothenburg by boat, ferry, car, bike or on foot.

Malmo is considered Sweden’s gateway to continental Europe. It is a southern port city and is directly connected by ferry and airlines to the rest of Europe, especially Denmark, northern Germany, Norway, Poland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Malmo is an interesting city because although it is considered a metropolis, it feels like its very small and cozy. Malmo is also the city in Sweden where all the immigration has seemed to have focused and for this reason it is the most multicultural of all Swedish cities, with over 164 nations and 100 languages spoken. This is showcased in the sheer variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and cultural events that the city holds every year.

The other regions like Northern Sweden is a rugged landscape of 4,000 m high towering peaks, pine forests, polar bears, reindeer, glaciers and pristine shimmering lakes. The people are mostly dotted along the coastline in settlements. Most of this land is a national park that has many touristic opportunities for those who will brave the cold. Central sweden is the heartland of Sweden and is flourishing from the influence of Stockholm and the surrounding cities. This part of Sweden is famous for its copper mines, Dalecarlian horses and Carl Larsson, the famous painter. Southern Sweden is where most of the population of Sweden lives and it is mostly farmland, forest and a great holiday place with temperate climes.

The Ice Hotel of Sweden is an ultimate place to relax. The Hotel is situated in the Swedish Lapland town of Jukkasjarvi. It opens every year in early December and closes at the end of April. Every year in October the artists and local villagers, most from the Sami tribe in the region, begin to build the new ice hotel, which opens in mid-December. Snow canons and front loaders start by forming the snow over the steel sections that are the main structure of the Ice hotel. Sections are moved around and replaced by ice pillars set in place to provide support to the snow arches. blocks of ice taken from the frozen Torne River each winter and frozen for use the following year, the Hotel at this time is in its twentieth re-incarnation and is as impressive as ever. It began meagerly 14 years ago – one room. The 2004 season boasted 50-rooms with 5,000 square metres built of 30,000 tons of snow and 4,000 tons of ice.

Inside the Ice hotel, there is a reception area, hall of pillars, Iceart exhibition, Absolut Icebar, Ice hotel cinema and an Icechurch and of course there is a warmer option. The hotel also has cabin accommodation, a warm bar where the staff is dominant take great enjoyment in asking if you’d like ice water with your drink with wry smiles in your neighborhood all round. All water that is used in taps and bathrooms coming straight from the river Torne. Each person is given an ultra-warm sleeping bag and most people commented how “warm” they felt during the night even though room the temperature is usually a steady five degrees below zero.

The Hotel also has a range of activities provided throughout the day while guests eagerly await night-fall in the hopes of catching a glimpse of those all too elusive Northern Lights. A trip by Snow Mobile is one option. After being taught to drive the equivalent of a jet-ski for on land use, the excursion follows tracks through the fir trees and along-side the frozen river before stopping for hot lingen berry juice (a local specialty), bread, cheese and smoked reindeer heart. Other activities include Hunting, Fishing, Snow driving, Horse Riding and Skiing. Most people stay at the Ice hotel for two or three nights, but you will only spend one night in the actual Ice hotel and the additional nights in the Scandinavian bungalows also on the property.

Many tourists go on vacation to Stockholm and stay in self catering apartments. When there they can visit the Vasa museum. This museum in Stockholm houses the fruits of some ground breaking labour, the 17th century warship Vasa. The ship sunk during its maiden voyage in 1628, and was recovered in 1961. The resurrected skeletons and relics remain the only existing example of ship architecture from the period. Stockholm, Sweden’s capital city houses numerous museums, aside from the Vasa museum, you can check out the Nordic Museum, Museum of Natural History and Museum of Modern Art. The city is peppered with examples of historical architecture, like Riddarholmskyrkan, which is the oldest building in Stockholm, pretty much every district and neighbourhood in the city has its own unique charm and character. Families on vacation can rent self catering accommodation in Stockholm. Gothenburg is the largest port in Scandinavia; about a million people live here and there is a plethora of attractions to keep the tourists busy. Take a leisurely saunter in the scenic Castle Wood Park, listen to a wide genre of music from Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, art enthusiasts can head over to the Museum of Art. Sweden features a stunning expanse of rugged beauty which is yet to be tarnished by commercialism, these makes for perfect hiking spots. Lovers of the outdoors may rent a holiday cottage or log cabin and use them as a base to explore the beautiful countryside. The law provides rights of access for anyone, provided they respect the local culture and nature. Sweden comprises of over 24,000 islands and 100,000 lakes, so it’s not much of a surprise that boating is an integral part of Swedish life. Most tours take you on a sightseeing trip around the Swedish archipelago. The Gota Canal is a favourite tourist haunt but there are loads of other places that interest the water-craft bound traveller. Stop by the Linkoping Cathedral in Ostergotland to treat yourself to some splendid Gothic architecture. This massive cathedral is the burial site of a 15th century bishop, and is embellished with some priceless paintings which were gifted by King John III. Skiing enthusiasts would find no dearth for fun as Sweden offers some of the finest locales for the sport. There are some great ski chalets available to rent and many families rent them while on vacation. Hemavan, in Lapland is a great ski precinct with its vast open areas and mountains. Arefjallen resort is said to be the world’s largest with a ski run of more than a hundred kilometers, the ski race in April draws hundreds every year. Riksgransen in the extreme north is famed for its snowboarding championships and non-stop skiing during the spring. During the spring it seems the sun never goes below the horizon, perfectly symbolizing the spirit of this country where the fun never seems to end.

Sweden has an excellent transport infrastructure for freight forwarding as the government has consistently recognised its vital importance to economic prosperity and prioritised its modernisation and development.

There are a number of major ports and harbours that include state of the art terminals and offer container handling facilities. These include Gaevle, Goteborg, Malmo, Sundsvall, Helsingborg, Halmstad, Kalmar and Stockholm.

The domestic air market in Sweden was deregulated in 1991 and since then a number of Swedish airlines have been competing to serve the international freight markets by carrying cargo. These airlines include Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), Transwede and Malmo Aviation. SAS is, in fact, jointly owned by Sweden, Denmark and Norway, with Sweden owning nearly half. Of this stake, the Swedish government owns 50%. SAS is committed to air transport liberalisation and has pioneered many strategic partnerships to drive forward its ‘open skies’ policy. The liberalisation of the air transport market creates a further advantage to the freight services industry.

There are also 164,000 kilometres of paved roads in Sweden, of which 1500 kilometres are expressways, and 2000 kilometres of navigable waterways. The canny freight company makes a full analysis of the various routes and options available for freight forwarding and ensures that the customer is the ultimate winner.

The 10 mile bridge and tunnel across the straits of Oresund from Malmo in Sweden to Copenhagen in Denmark is regarded as one of the most significant transport infrastructure developments in Europe in recent years.

Indeed, nowhere is Sweden’s commitment to its freight transport infrastructure more evident than in its road transport policy. In 2006, the Transport Research Arena conference was staged in Goteborg to allow participants to see some developments that are regarded as the world’s most advanced road transport developments and will have a significant impact on the international freight market, revolutionising the intelligence available to the shipping company.

These focus on the use of advanced information and communications technology to provide intelligent vehicle and transport systems, designed to improve logistics. Of benefit both to the freight transport market and passenger transport. The new technology will facilitate shorter journey times and also more efficient use of fuel. These will not only give Sweden a competitive edge in the short term, they are also likely to serve as a blueprint for transport systems worldwide, heralding a new era of productivity and optimised efficiency in freight services.

Sweden is also working on effectively using information and communication technology to improve the competitiveness of its rail system for freight forwarding. In Sweden, as in any other countries, rail has lost share of the freight forwarding market to road haulage in recent years and this is an area where Swedish rail operators are keen to build revenues. It is therefore likely that Sweden will also lead the way in ‘intelligent trains’.

These improvements will combine to see a picture of continuing innovation and development in the transport infrastructure in Sweden, ensuring that the freight services industry in the country stays at the cutting edge.
